We flew into Miyako Island airport on Sunday the 2nd of April. Spring is actually our preferred season in Okinawa, as summer is just too hot and humid for us, not to mention that it is peak season in July/August, and the hotels, restaurants and beaches are crowded, prices are more expensive and the tours and hire-cars are all booked out. So, spring is best.
We had woken up at 5 AM that morning so as to catch a ferry from Tsu in Mie prefecture to Chubu airport in Nagoya. Our flight to Naha was as good as can be expected (flying free on Jetstar using mileage points). Our paid flight to Miyako on JAL was more comfortable and our hire car was waiting for us at the airport. It had been almost a decade since finding our way around the island last time, but fortunately our hire-car had a brand-new Satellite Navigational computer which was incredibly accurate and easy to use. We were pretty tired by the time we arrived at our hotel, the Hotel Breeze Bay Marina (now part of the new Shigira Resort). I can recommend this hotel with complete confidence – it is awesome, and the staff there bend over are extremely friendly and helpful. Of course, Japan must be the only place in the world where you can be greeted by a doorman dressed as Super Mario!
This beach is famous for the large quantity of natural coral reef that exists along the shoreline. We were so excited to see the white beach and sparkling waters, under which seemed to float an amazing array of coral, and we couldn’t wait to snorkel amongst it. There were so many fish, which we saw as soon as we entered the water and swam out just a few meters. We even saw a beautiful, blue starfish. We enjoyed ourselves so much in the water that two hours passed as though it had only been a few minutes.
Finally, we ended up at a gourmet burger house called Doug’s Burger. Doug is in fact a Japanese person who originally hailed from Tokyo, lived in America, and fell in love with Miyako. Due to his love of American food, he created a quality burger joint, and right next to it established Doug’s Coffee. We had seen it on the internet, and after a day at the beach, we were curious to try it out. http://www.dougsburger.com
