As a writer, I needed my own author website. After searching online for website-hosting companies, including Blogger, Web Hosting Hub, Bluehost, Dreamhost, HostMonster and so on, I chose iPage. Why? As a writer, I wanted more than just a blog – I needed a multi-page website on which I could showcase my debut novel (Gold of the Rising Sun), my poetry, my articles on Japan and writing in general, as well as a cover page.
Furthermore, iPage was reasonably priced, based in the U.S. (where I wish to publish my book), and most importantly, it looked good on my computer screen! It had a classy appearance and smart imagery compared to some of its more bland-looking competitors. It comes with free security, and has unlimited disk space and bandwidth. It even has a personalized email address if you want that. It provides a free domain name (for one year), and free ‘marketing credits’ that might come in handy later.
The thing that really sold me though was its simplicity. I am neither a computer geek nor a hacker of any sort. I also don’t want to spend a lot of time laboring over the building of a website, which is why I didn’t bother trying to use website building software such as Dreamweaver or Rapidweaver, or any of the other tools for building websites that are out there. I want to spend my time writing, not computing!
So am I biased? Well, now I am, you might say. But before I chose iPage to host my website, I was completely open-minded and impartial. What clinched the deal for me was the support they offered, not to mention their friendly service (before and after becoming a customer). They have an informative website, useful videos, lots of good advice, and a wonderful selection of site-building tools, and they have experts on hand 24/7 (in the U.S.). Tech support is still available elsewhere (via website, email, phone).
Furthermore, I could select the products I required, rather than being forced to accept pre-arranged packages loaded with things that I didn’t need. The team at iPage were also very flexible. Despite the fact that iPage is based in America, they allowed me to pay my annual fees in Australian dollars (I am Australian and use an Australian-based credit card for all online purchases); I found this to be very convenient. Not all website hosting companies are so obliging. They even offer a money-back guarantee.
Another issue that was raised was speed, with complaints that the servers were slow. Once again, I have not found this to be so in my case. I live in Japan, and the servers are in America, and yet I have always enjoyed good speeds all times of the day.
Others seemed to balk at the idea of paying upfront rather than having the option to pay monthly. iPage gives you the choice of paying for a year, two years, or three years, depending on which service you choose. To be honest, I looked at some companies that allowed monthly payments, and their fees worked out to be more expensive. I found iPage to be reasonably priced overall by comparison.
Lastly, iPage is a shared hosting service. That means that you don’t have a dedicated server. Again, those companies that do provide dedicated servers charge more for the service. But my question is: who needs it? I certainly don’t. And you can always get your money back if you find the service that iPage provides unsuitable for your needs. I and many other iPage users (first time website users and small businesses mostly) have found the shared hosting service provided by iPage to be more than sufficient. Shared hosting is actually the most popular type of service for hosting personal websites. In any case, it certainly hasn’t been an issue at all for me. Again, this might only be an issue for advanced computer users, programmers and larger businesses.
In my experience, and this still continues to be the case, I have never experienced any problems with my website using iPage. It is easy to use, stable, and looks impressive. The speed has always been adequate for my needs and there is unlimited bandwidth available. iPage’s service is good and inexpensive, and there are often lots of free features to use. iPage, which started in 1998, is also one of those web-hosting companies that has stood the test of time. I haven’t yet come across a better website-hosting company that is as reliable and suited to my personal needs as iPage. It’s the best choice in my opinion.
Have a great week!
