What has inspired you personally in your life?
Incidentally I received some wonderful feedback recently, for which I was most grateful, regarding my last two writing blog entries (the first two chapters of Hideki’s Diary). What inspired the concept of ‘a book within a book’ was Matthew Reilly’s novel, Temple. As I considered this, it occurred to me that I should show my appreciation for the various things that have inspired me, not only as a writer, but also as a person.
I initially wanted to write down a ‘Best Ten’ list of movies, books and music, but this ultimately proved too difficult a challenge. So here is my list of the best twenty movies, books and musical inspirations that I have enjoyed personally. Please note that there are so many more classic movies, books and pieces of music out there, and that this list is only based on my own limited experiences.
I’ve also ordered the list alphabetically to avoid any confusion about ‘ranking’.
Da Vinci Code
Four Weddings and a Funeral
Last of the Mohicans
Le Grande Bleu (The Big Blue)
Star Wars (series)

My Top Thirty Musical Artists:
Now when it came to music, I really struggled. I also realized that I couldn’t name albums, as that would dramatically raise the number of musical influences on my life. What I ended up with are the top thirty musical artists that have struck a chord, so to speak, with me over the years. There are many more who are missing from this list, because to be honest, they number in the hundreds.
Guns ’n’ Roses
Simon & Garfunkel
These movies, books and musicians have all inspired me, and in one way or another influenced my writing. In the same way that my favorite musical artists had numerous albums that I liked, my favorite authors (especially Stephen King, Clive Cussler, Matthew Reilly and John Grisham) wrote many books that I enjoyed reading, and not just the ones listed.
In addition to reading a myriad of books, watching loads of amazing movies and listening to stacks of marvelous music (and numerous movie soundtracks), reading poetry has also had a huge influence on me, inspiring me to write my own poetry (see my poetry page). Some of my favorite poets include William Shakespeare, Robert Burns, Walt Whitman, Robert Frost, Nan Witcomb, Omar Khayyam, and my dear friend Kathy Paysen. I hope this latest writing Blog makes you think about your own favorite movies, books, musicians, and poetry.
Have a great week!
